In September 2020, Marvel Studios announced they had cast Vellani as Kamala Khan in their upcoming live-action television miniseries Ms. Marvel.
Vellani hit the jackpot after submitting a self-tape to Disney and having two screen tests – an in-person one in February that year and a Zoom screen test over the internet. All of this stemmed from her aunt forwarding her a casting call for the role of Kamala Khan.
In June 2022, Vellani made her debut onscreen with a role in the movie A Fan’s Guide to Ms. Marvel. The fact that it was released on Disney+ before the series premiere shows that she has faith and optimism for her acting career. On June 8th, Ms. Marvel premiered on Disney+, marking Vellani’s on-screen debut.
Both the movie itself and her portrayal of Kamala Khan received widespread praise from critics. Fans were very excited about the casting choice for their favorite superhero, saying that it was perfect and that it would be a “dream come true” to see her portray the title character from beginning to end.
